Lauper
oil on canvas, 120×120 cm.
After the Cindy Lauper album She’s So Unusual, original cover photograph by Annie Leibovitz.
Again, an Annie Leibovitz photograph provides the inspiration for a statement about an artist’s entire body of work via a single image. By melting the central imagery of Cindy Lauper‘s breakout debut, She’s So Unusual, into a watery pool of living color, the vivid joy of the material therein is less specific and therefore more universal. Few albums are as much fun from start to finish and by obscuring the performer and the setting it’s something of a brand new invitation to have fun on one’s own terms.
